Ermha inc. (Eastern Regions Mental Health Association) is a non-government organisation in the South East of Melbourne, which has been delivering support to people experiencing mental illness for over 25 years. Ermha inc. programs promote, develop and sustain the independence and community inclusion of people experiencing mental ill health.

Ermha inc. knows that with the right support, people with a mental illness can learn to thrive as they discover (or re-discover) the skills and knowledge required to navigate through life. Ermha inc. supports each client, acknowledging their different needs, desires, dreams and objectives.

Based on the principle of social inclusion and using engagement in meaningful activity (such as employment) to improve mental health, Ermha inc. developed the Barista Training and MadCap Café concepts.

The starting point for MadCap participants is the Aspirations Day Program. This program specialises in group work, social, recreational and vocational focused activities. Then comes the Barista Training program and work at a MadCap Café. Having gained the skills and confidence at Aspirations, the Barista Training and MadCap, participants are supported and encouraged to branch out and seek work in the wider community.

Many people in our community experience barriers to employment. Unemployment can affect self esteem, triggering a downward spiral into depression and other mental health issues. MadCap Café and the MadCap Barista training course offer opportunities for people to get on their feet and walk the path to better mental health.

The MadCap Barista training program, at MadCap's Training Centre, is a four day accredited course in Dandenong. The program is designed for anyone experiencing barriers to employment, and teaches the skills needed to pursue fulfilling and meaningful employment opportunities. (Barriers to employment are not restricted to mental ill health, and can include a simple lack of training.)

Trainees learn coffee history and roasting; brewing methods; machine and grinder knowledge; dosage and tamping; coffee art; milk heating and treatment. At the completion of the course, graduates undertake work experience at MadCap Café, rounding out their preparation to enter the workforce.

The MadCap Barista training program operates with the ambassadorial support of 5 time Victorian Barista of the Year, former Australian Barista of the Year and 2nd at the World Barista Championships Copenhagen, David Makin.
