At MadCap Café, we provide work opportunities for people experiencing mental ill health and work towards better understanding in the community of mental illness and how it affects one in five of us everyday. With a very public face in the community, MadCap is actively changing attitudes and behaviours, eliminating the stigma attached to and breaking down the misunderstanding surrounding mental ill-health. Mental ill health can take many forms, such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia or a psychosis; it ranges from mild to severe. Those experiencing mental ill health could be your mum, brother, girlfriend, boss, mate or… you. Even at the best restaurant in town, your food is likely to be served or prepared by someone with experience of mental ill health. Mental illness is not rare. It’s everywhere, but often misunderstood. Like any café, bar, shop or restaurant, some staff at MadCap have a mental illness. But you probably can’t tell who they are. Because, like with a toothache or backache, mental illness doesn’t discriminate, and you can’t always see it. And like a toothache or backache you just have to deal with it. You make the coffee. You do the work. You carry on. Not-For-Profit, at MadCap Café, we train and employ people experiencing mental ill health, giving a rightful place in the community and opening doors to a better life. At MadCap, we don’t employ people to make coffee. We make coffee to employ people. MadCap provides a safe, flexible and understanding work environment for people to take a risk and stumble if needs be on the sometimes long and winding often cyclic path to mental health. At MadCap, we focus on ability, not disability. It’s about what we can do. Not what we can’t. To find out about work opportunities at MadCap, email reception@ermha.org or call (03) 9706 7388 |
